When we first covered the cards on the top 10 list for Sword & Shield, it was right after Rebel Clash had released. Since then, this list has seen a huge amount of mixups and surprises. In fact, the card that was once featured as the #1 most expensive from the set is now at #5. This showcases how collecting tastes have shifted over time, as well as how changes in the TCG itself can cause some cards to rise and fall as they go in and out of rotation. Let's take a look and see how the past several years have impacted the price of the most expensive cards from Sword & Shield base set!
#10. Morpeko VMAX #204 Secret Rare

|
Morpeko VMAX #204 Secret Rare is currently valued around $8 at the time of writing. |
Right off the bat we have a card that wasn't even featured in the original top 10 list. As it turns out, Rainbow Secret Rare cards have really only started to become popular and desired by collectors recently.
This is a common trend in Pokemon we have seen over the years. Typically the cards that will end up having some of the biggest returns are the ones that fly under the radar for a long time. Rainbow Secret Rare cards are difficult to pull, and because not many collectors valued them at the time, they are harder to come by now. We gladly welcome Morpeko VMAX #204 to the top 10 list of most expensive Sword & Shield cards.
#9. Snorlax V #197 Ultra Rare

Snorlax V #197 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $8.98 at the time of writing. |
The Snorlax V #197 Full Art card also wasn't on the original Top 10 list, but with Full Art cards growing in popularity, plus with the added benefit of being Gen-1, we have recently seen this card climbing in value.
Snorlax is featured in typical Full Art fashion against a colorful background. This design, while simple, effectively highlights the Pokémon's massive size and laid-back demeanor, creating a striking contrast that makes the card both eye-catching and memorable.
#8. Lapras VMAX #203 Secret Rare

|
Lapras VMAX #203 Secret Rare is currently valued around $10.05 at the time of writing. |
The 8th card on our list is a long-time fan favorite, ever since this Pokemon appeared in the first generation. At #203/202, the very first secret card in the set, the Rainbow Lapras VMAX is the first rainbow card to make an appearance in the base set of Pokemon Sword and Shield card collection.
Lapras actually appears in the set 6 times - once as a regular rare card (#48), once as a reverse holo (#48 /2) once as a holo rare V (#49), once as a holo rare VMAX (#50), once as an ultra-rare V (#189), and finally as a secret rare Rainbow VMAX (#203).
The secret Lapras VMAX Rainbow card has G-Max Pump, a 90+ power attack that does an additional 30 damage for each water energy that has been attached to this Pokemon card.
#7. Zamazenta V #212 Secret Rare

|
|
Zamazenta V #212 Secret Rare is currently valued around $10.39 at the time of writing. |
While this card has made the list since we first visited the Galar region in 2020, Zamazenta V Secret Rare #212 has dropped from the #3 spot to the #7 spot in the past few years. As it turns out, it seems the hype surrounding the new legendary Pokemon from Gen-8 would fizzle over time. Where could it be in another 4 years? Who knows!
As #212/202, the gold Zamazenta V card is one of a few secret rares in the set. Collectors have a lot to like about this card - whether it is because it is a hard to pull V, features one of the new legendary Pokemon, or is a secret-rare gold card.
#6. Quick Ball #216 Secret Rare

|
Quick Ball #216 Secret Rare is currently valued around $11.53 at the time of writing. |
Players of Pokemon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch will quickly recognize the design of the Quick Ball, considering they probably used 300 of them at the end of their playthrough.
In addition to offering tremendous utility in the game, it also is a great card to use in the TCG universe. This card allows you to search your deck for a Basic Pokemon, reveal it, and put it into your hand.
This card also is highly collectible since some collectors enjoy specifically collecting Pokeball cards. This card likely will be a big pick for collectors in the future, especially since it is the final card in the set, #216/202.
#5. Zacian V #211 Secret Rare

|
|
Zacian V #211 Secret Rare is currently valued around $12.38 at the time of writing. |
Once the single most expensive card on this list, Zacian V #211 has dropped to the #5 spot right above the gold Zamazenta. Anyone who was collecting during this time will surely remember the hype this card had surrounding it. This was before Sword and Shield had done anything more venturous than Gold and Rainbow Secret Rare cards. Eventually, certain Full Arts, Alternate Arts, and Trainer Gallery cards would move in to take the place of the once highly collectible Secret Rare Gold cards.
Of course, this means that now is the perfect time to pick up any of these previously sought after Gold Secret Rare cards if you are looking to add some flash to your binder. While they still make the list, they are far more affordable than they were in the past.
#4. Marnie #208 Secret Rare

|
|
Marnie #208 Secret Rare is currently valued around $13.72 at the time of writing. |
Marnie quickly became a fan-favorite rival from Pokemon Sword and Shield, so it is no surprise that the rainbow version of this card is quickly gaining in value. What might be a bit more surprising to some people is it is not the most expensive Marnie card in the set.
While it is true that Rainbow Secret Rare cards have climbed in value as collectors started to appreciate them more over the years, some regular Full Art cards, particularly Trainers, have seen some of the most growth as tastes have changed.
#3. Snorlax VMAX #142 Ultra Rare

|
|
Snorlax VMAX #142 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $15.17 at the time of writing. |
We have a soft-spot for the regular VMAX cards from Sword & Shield, since at the time, they were the first VMAX cards to ever come out of the TCG. Sword & Shield brought us the Lapras and the Snorlax as well, both Gen-1 favorites. VMAX used to be exciting to pull, but after Alternate Arts and Trainer Gallery cards came into the picture, the VMAX cards seemed to fade from popularity.
This VMAX Snorlax didn't make the original list because it is just a plain VMAX. Years later, it has managed to climb all the way to #3 on the list, and honestly, we are super happy about that. It definitely makes you wonder if the Lapras VMAX could be on this list in a few years.
#2. Marnie #200 Ultra Rare

|
|
Marnie #200 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $32.33 at the time of writing. |
Full Art Marnie #200 is a card that has stayed strong on this list ever since the release of Sword & Shield. While Trainers largely weren't appreciated around this time, Marnie was definitely one to buck that trend. There was a time where this card even took the #1 spot on the list during the surge of Full-Art Trainer hype.
There are other Full Art Trainer cards found in Sword & Shield, though Marnie is the only to make the Top 10. If you take a look at the runner-ups at the bottom of this article, you can see several cards like Bede and Professor's Research, which could easily make this list in a number of years.
#1. Snorlax VMAX #206 Secret Rare

|
|
Snorlax VMAX #206 Secret Rare is currently valued around $44.69 at the time of writing. |
Once #6 on this list, Snorlax VMAX #206 has managed to climb all the way to the #1 spot in the 4 years since we wrote this article. We are thrilled to see this, as the Snorlax and Lapras VMAX were our favorite cards from the set.
If you manage to pull this card you should definitely be excited. Currently, the Snorlax VMAX Rainbow Secret Rare #206 is about 3x more expensive than the regular VMAX counterpart, and has a solid lead over the #2 spot on the list as well. We expect Snorlax VMAX could continue to hold strong for some time.
