Join DiscordThe Mega Charizard X ex UPC actually mirrors the previous Charizard UPC from the Sword & Shield era in both demand and supply. Despite the original influx of demand for the SWSH era box, the price would steeply decline under MSRP. There was a time when that box was around the $70 mark on the secondary market. Now, you would be hard-pressed to find it priced under $380.
Although the current Charizard X ex UPC is still higher than MSRP, could it see a similar draw down in price? Originally this box was going for well over $300 on the secondary market, but recent weeks have seen it hit sub $150.
Today we are diving into the Mega Charizard X ex UPC, its contents, and doing an analysis of the expected value.
Mega Charizard X ex UPC
Mega Charizard X ex UPC
Includes 18 booster packs, 2 full art promo cards, a Charizard playmat, 65 card sleeves, and TCG accessories. What Comes Inside the Mega Charizard X ex UPC?
The Mega Charizard X ex UPC comes with 18 booster packs, 2 full art promos, a Charizard playmat, 65 card sleeves, and TCG accessories.
The real value of the box comes down to the booster packs included. While there could be some variance, you generally would expect the following breakdown for the packs:
- 4 Phantasmal Flames
- 4 Mega Evolution
- 4 Destined Rivals
- 4 Journey Together
- 2 Surging Sparks
The pack selection is nothing to scoff at - Destined Rivals is regarded by the majority of collectors as one of the top sets from the Scarlet & Violet era. Mega Evolution and Phantasmal Flames both have chances at high value Special Illustration Rares and Mega Ultra Rares, and Journey Together and Surging Sparks have a handful of heavy hitters like the Lillie's Clefairy and the Pikachu ex #238.
At a market price of around $150, your pack price is about $8.33 before promos and accessories. This is noteworthy, because that is a good bit higher than the MSRP you would hope to purchase of around $4 or $5 per pack. If you can get this box for MSRP you are looking at $120-$140 range, depending on the retailer.
So how much are the promos going for?
What Promos Are Included?
Right now, you can find the promos sealed for around $60. Though there is a bit of volatility on these cards at present, you can expect about $50 for the Charizard and $10 for the Oricorio. These cards come from Japanese sets Inferno X and MEGA Dream ex, but were excluded from our English sets to be promos instead.
Factoring $50 for the promos, a $5.55 pack price gets us much closer to our MSRP price of $4-$5 per pack. If you can manage to get $10-$20 from the remaining TCG accessories, then you are landing within MSRP.
If you choose to grade these cards, both in PSA 10 can fetch a combined $700. Be very aware that the population counts for these cards will shoot through the roof in the coming years as more boxes get opened, so there is likely to be a short window where these prices are possible.
Will the Charizard X ex UPC Go Lower?
We can only guess, but we think yes. In fact, we suspect this box will have both downside and upside in its future. With a great pack selection and promos, any struggle for demand will eventually expire. Even still, it can't be overstated how much Pokemon is printing, and planning to print in 2026, having recently claimed 1.27 million additional square feet for manufacturing . There are already millions of these boxes in circulation, and more are coming.
Since release, the Mega Charizard X ex UPC has already dropped from early market prices of $300+ to about $150. It could easily go lower, but there are more collectors in this hobby than ever before.
Put simply, this is a good product, with good packs and good promos, that is worth its value in contents, but could easily be cheaper in the future. Long term, it has room to grow.
