Top 10 Most Expensive Pokemon Cards from Brilliant Stars

Around the time of Chilling Reign, Evolving Skies, and Fusion Strike, sentiment was a bit mixed on these sets. Each of these 3 sets had absolutely fantastic artwork in the Alternate Art category, but unless you were purchasing a large quantity of packs, or were otherwise extremely lucky, you were unlikely to pull any of these cards. This was because the pull rates on the average Alternate Art V from this era is about 1/150 packs, and the Alternate Art VMAX is even harder to pull at around 1/300 packs (making some individual cards have odds 1/1000 or worse.) This would lead to these sets getting nicknames like 'Chilling Pain', 'Evolving Cries', and 'Fusion Sike.' With Brilliant Stars, the Pokemon Company would address this concern with the introduction of the Trainer Gallery - a subset of Character Art cards that could be pulled in the Reverse Holo slot.

This set has Charizard and Eeveelutions? It's no wonder much of the Pokemon community views Brilliant Stars as one of the best sets from the Sword and Shield era. At #10 on the list, we have Full Art Charizard #153.

With so many Alternate Arts and Trainer Gallery cards to choose from, it is usually a bit surprising for a Full Art Pokemon card to make it on these lists. That said, Charizard is certainly the exception to this rule.

Mimikyu VMAX #TG17 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $15.31 at the time of writing.

This Mimikyu VMAX Ultra Rare #TG17 from the Trainer Gallery has had no problem in catching the attention of collectors all over the hobby. This artwork features Mimikyu in Dynamax form, and Acerola using him as a giant pillow.

Early after release, the gold and rainbow cards from Brilliant Stars made up much of the top 10 list. Now, collectors definitely seem to be gravitating more toward the unique art styles of Trainer Gallery cards and Alternate Art cards.

Sylveon VMAX #TG15 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $18.02 at the time of writing.

At #8 we get another VMAX Trainer Gallery card, Sylveon VMAX #TG15. The perspective on this card gives a good indication of the size of Sylveon in its Dynamax form, and despite the busy artwork, our attention is drawn straight to the middle of Sylveon and Valerie. This is a great design and is one of our favorite cards from Brilliant Stars.

#7. Sylveon V #TG14 Ultra Rare

Sylveon V #TG14 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $18.74 at the time of writing.

At #7 we get our first regular V from the Trainer Gallery with the Sylveon V TG14/TG30. This card features Valerie, a Gym Leader and Sylveon's Trainer from Pokemon X and Y Generation VI. We are big fans of the choice of color and gentle design of this card.

Umbreon V #TG22 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $23.99 at the time of writing.

Of course, with Sylveon V making the top list, you have to assume Umbreon V would also be featured. Although it is a far cry from the price tag of the popular Umbreon V and VMAX from Evolving Skies, this Trainer Gallery Umbreon V still easily makes the top 10 list at #6.

With a pull rate of approximately 1/360 packs for this particular card, it is definitely worth celebrating if you manage to pull this card, or any of the Eeveelutions in this set for that matter. 

#5. Ultra Ball #186 Secret Rare

Ultra Ball #186 Secret Rare is currently valued around $24.05 at the time of writing.

This Gold Secret Rare Ultra Ball is the only Item card to make this list, as well as the only Gold Secret Rare. That is a bit surprising, as you'll notice the runner-ups to this list definitely have some heavy-hitting Gold Secret Rare Pokemon cards, such as Moltres and Arceus.

It isn't the first time a Gold Secret Rare Pokeball has been featured in the Top 10 list, such as the Golden Quick Ball which made the Sword and Shield base list. These items usually offer a lot of utility in the TCG, which is typically why they fetch higher prices than you might expect.

#4. Arceus V #166 Ultra Rare

Arceus V #166 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $30.43 at the time of writing.

Arceus V Alternate Art #166 is the 4th most expensive card in the Brilliant Stars set, and the first Alternate Art to make our list so far. Arceus is a Mythical Pokemon introduced in Generation IV. This Pokemon is known as 'The Original One' - with strong implication that Arceus created the Pokemon Universe. Arceus is the master of both the Lake Guardians and the Creation Trio.

#3. Umbreon VMAX #TG23 Ultra Rare

Umbreon VMAX #TG23 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $33.23 at the time of writing.

Third on our list we have the third instance of a VMAX Trainer Gallery card - The Umbreon VMAX #TG23. This card features Umbreon in Dynamax form, together with Indigo Elite Four Trainer Karen, hanging out on top of buildings in the town against the night sky.

It is no secret that the Pokemon community seems to have a strong connection with the Eeveelutions, and after their success in Evolving Skies as Alternate Art cards, it is not terribly surprising that Eeveelutions would do well in the Trainer Gallery set as well.

#2. Charizard VSTAR #174 Secret Rare

Charizard VSTAR #174 Secret Rare is currently valued around $44.5 at the time of writing.

Early into release, the Rainbow Rare VSTAR Charizard was the most expensive card in Brilliant Stars. However, with the community gradually moving away from Rainbow Secret Rare cards in favor of Alternate Art cards, this card was surpassed by the current number one.

Still, give Charizard a higher rarity, put some texture and vibrance on the art, and you have the recipe for a pricey card.

Charizard V #154 Ultra Rare is currently valued around $126.31 at the time of writing.

We are a simple people. Put Charizard on a card, designate it Alternate Art, and bam - you've got the most expensive card in the set.

This Alternate Art Charizard V is more than just a brand name, though - the artwork by Murayama depicts Charizard and Venusaur battling in a field, with a unique perspective from behind Charizard. The environment on this card is very cool - I mean really, take a moment to appreciate the mountainous backdrop, the fog, and the clouded sky.

But even beyond the artwork, this card is part of a series of cards, featuring the XY Promo Charizard EX (XY-P 276) and the Sleeping Charizard Promo #260 from the Charizard Ultra Premium Collection. All 3 cards feature the Charizard and Venusaur battle and aftermath, and we love it.
